about

PCP Trio’s internal / external / focused / broad features two new compositions by Montreal-based trumpet player Craig Pedersen (Sound of the Mountain, Ratchet Orchestra, Ensemble Supermusique, Montreal-Toronto Art Orchestra).

The new trio featuring Eric Craven (Hanged Up, Drophead, Quarter Tonne, Silver Mt. Zion) and Alex Pelchat (Ensemble Habitant, BUM, En Fer) draws influence equally from Pauline Oliveros’ Horse Sings from A Cloud, Keiji Haino’s Fushitsusha and Slayer’s Reign in Blood. Hard-driving and noisy, Pelchat, Craven and Pedersen work together as a clear unit, pushing and pulling against each others’ musical ideas.
The CD opens with Crosslegged, a simple text-based score that serves as departure and arrival points for the trio’s group improvisations, setting the tone for an interplay between dissonant clusters, dense rolls, held pitches and deconstructed musical ideas.

At the heart of the session is Extended Listening Blues, expanding a single iteration of a 12-bar blues into an 18-minute form, replacing harmonic “tonic-dominant” based tension and release with that created using different listening approaches - internal, external, focused and broad. The resulting dramatic and unexpected shifts contain unexplainable musical qualities that couldn’t otherwise have been predicted.
